So I see a lot of births, get a lot of really cool shots (many only moms will see because they are THAT cool) but have you ever wondered when all is said and done what some of my favorite shots are? Well wonder no more. My favorite shots always end up being the simplest and I will tell you why. When a mom is in labor there is one thing she needs a lot of and that is solidarity. She needs to know that the people around her love her, care for her, and that she is safe. Often times its one simple touch. One small reminder. I always get this shot when it happens because its so real and in my mind says it all in one small embrace, I’m right here, I wont go far. Now that I have school age children they often ask why they have to hold my hand. It use to be “because I want you to be safe” but over the past year I realized that was no longer the case. For my son was not much shorter than me these days. He knows not to step into the street without looking, he knows to stay close to me. So why do I still insist that he holds my hand? The answer was quite simply “well when you hold my hand, I feel safer. When you hold my hand I know you love me the same way I love you”. One day he wont want to hold my hand, but I always remind him that daddy still holds my hand because we are in this together. So as a photographer while this image looks so simple, to me these are often the ones that say the most “We are in this together”.
